COMIC BOOK
#facepuncher

If you crossed HBO’s Silicon Valley with the Korean cult classic film Old Boy, you’d have something very similar to #facepuncher. This book, for me, marks the moment when I became a big boy as a comic book creator (in terms of art direction, execution, and plotting long-form story development). The story explores what it might look like if a technology innovator named Hunter was solely responsible for all the modern tech that has taken over our lives (smartphones + social media), but… he had the tech stolen from him and then held captive for close to two decades, essentially never present to see how these products have negatively affected global society. From this initial conceit, the story follows Hunter as he embarks on a revenge tour against his captors. Using his brilliant understanding of technology to create products designed for violence, he unleashes holy hell on Silicon Valley.
The art in this book, illustrated and colored by the brilliant Adrian Sibar, might be the all-time favorite of any book I’ve ever written. The true tragedy of this book is that it never went to publication (despite interest from several top-tier creator-owned companies) due to differences with the core creative team. For me, this book stands as a lasting reminder to choose the people you work with very carefully. Remember that, kids!
